This part of the country sees some of the roughest hail anywhere, and it rarely falls straight down. Wind drives it in at an angle, so instead of only bruising the open field of the roof it hammers edges, ridges, rakes, and flashing. Those are the details that leak first. A roof can look passable from the yard and still have a chewed up ridge cap and split pipe boots.

Sustained wind finds any shingle that was not fastened properly, works at the perimeter until the sealant strip lets go, then peels from there. Large hail can dent it, and we say so up front, because a dent in a standing seam panel is cosmetic while a fractured shingle mat is a leak waiting to happen.
